Stop an Application – Heroku

Just a quick post on how to stop an app on Heroku:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# heroku maintenance:on
Maintenance mode enabled.

This will display a static page to all visitors but still allows for migrations etc:

Heroku - Application Offline for Maintenance
Heroku - Application Offline for Maintenance

To re-enable the app simply use the following:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# heroku maintenance:off
Maintenance mode disabled.

Heroku Upload – Permission Denied

I ran into a bit of trouble uploading an app to heroku for the first time, I was unable to authenticate.

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# git push heroku master
Permission denied (publickey).
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

This turned out to be an issue with my public key, in order to fix it simply create a new one:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# ssh-keygen -t rsa
Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Enter file in which to save the key (/root/.ssh/id_rsa):
Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):
Enter same passphrase again:
...

Re-upload it:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# heroku keys:add /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub
Uploading ssh public key /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub

And finally re-push everything:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# git push heroku master
Enter passphrase for key '/root/.ssh/id_rsa':

PostgreSQL Installation Error – Ruby

I ran into a bit of problem moving an app to a test Heroku host – I needed to install PostgreSQL. I added the following to my Gemfile:

#Gemfile
#gem 'sqlite3'
gem 'pg'

I then tried to run bundle install:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# bundle install

However I received the following error:

root@chris-VirtualBox:~/site# bundle install

Re-Index Sunspot/Solr – Ruby on Rails

Just a very quick post on how to re-index Sunspot/Solr – simply open the console and enter the following command:

chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ rake sunspot:solr:reindex

WARNING: 'task :t, arg, :needs => [deps]' is deprecated. Please use 'task :t, [args] => [deps]' instead.
    at /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sunspot_rails-1.2.1/lib/sunspot/rails/tasks.rb:41
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$

That’s all there is to it, nice and easy!

Uninstalling a Gem – Ruby on Rails

Due to a few recent issues with SunSpot (see my previous posts), I’ve decided to uninstall it until I have enough time to work on it properly. Once again, Ruby makes this pretty simple:

chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ sudo gem uninstall sunspot
[sudo] password for chris:

You have requested to uninstall the gem: sunspot-1.2.1 sunspot_rails-1.2.1 depends on [sunspot (= 1.2.1)]
If you remove this gems, one or more dependencies will not be met.
Continue with Uninstall? [Yn]  y

Remove executables: sunspot-solr, sunspot-installer in addition to the gem? [Yn] y

Removing sunspot-solr
Removing sunspot-installer

Successfully uninstalled sunspot-1.2.1

How to View a Table’s Structure – Sqlite3

Just a quick post on how to view a table’s structure in SQLite3. Again, not something I’ve broken yet – more something I seem to keep forgetting. Simply start Sqlite:
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ sqlite3 -line db/development.sqlite3
SQLite version 3.7.4
Enter “.help” for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a “;”

Then enter the following: – substituting orders for whatever your table name happens to be:
sqlite> pragma table_info(orders);
cid = 0
name = id
type = INTEGER
notnull = 1
dflt_value =
pk = 1

cid = 1
name = user_id
type = integer
notnull = 0
dflt_value =
pk = 0

cid = 3
name = created_at
type = datetime
notnull = 0
dflt_value =
pk = 0

Good Luck!

View All Tables – Sqlite3

Not really something that I’ve broken (yet), but definitely something I found useful when starting out with rails – how to view all tables:

Start Sqlite3 i.e.
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ sqlite3 -line db/development.sqlite3
SQLite version 3.7.4
Enter “.help” for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a “;”

Then simply enter the following:
sqlite> .tables
carts message_recipients products taggings
categories message_statuses schema_migrations tags
comments messages store_pages user_settings
images order_items store_settings users
line_items orders stores
locations product_images sub_orders
sqlite>

Good Luck!

Rails Server – Address Already in Use

Well, looks like the first thing I’ve managed to break today is WEBrick – a web server for ruby on rails. The general idea behind the error message appears to be that the address it’s trying to start is already in use:

Sure enough, it turns out that one of my previous WEBrick processes had not closed properly. I was able to view the existing processes using the following:
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ pgrep ruby
1601

In order to close them simply kill the process:
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ kill 1601

Ensure that the process is gone:
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ pgrep ruby

And finally, start WEBrick again.
chris@chris-VirtualBox:~/site$ rails server
